Q: How would you summarize what you do?
A: I am really excited to answer this question, because I am not sure my family and friends even understand what I do. I am mainly a transactional paralegal, meaning I facilitate closings for businesses and commercial real estate. This involves drafting purchase agreements, leases, closing statements, deeds, employment agreements, and whatever else is needed. I track key dates in contracts and keep clients, lenders, opposing attorneys, brokers, real estate agents, etc. informed as to what is happening with the matter they are involved with. I review title examinations and handle the disbursing of funds at closing. I also assist with general corporate matters like forming LLCs and preparing operating agreements. I am the glue!
Q: How long have you been a paralegal?
A: 15 years.
Q: What do you like best about your position?
A: I enjoy that my work is mainly self-directed. I am trusted to do what needs to be done. I am constantly challenged.
Q: What have you been most proud of in your career?
A: Repeat clients. Also, I never thought I’d be where I am today. I am proud of myself and so proud of the work I do.
Q: What’s your favorite work perk or benefit?
A: I really appreciate being able to work at home two days a week, seeing as I live an hour away. Having those two-to-three extra hours in a day is life-changing. My kitties love it, too!
Q: What advice would you give someone considering a paralegal career?
A: Go to a school that has adjunct professors who are attorneys in your area and impress them. This is how I got into the field, even though I hadn’t graduated yet and my only work experience at the time was 10 years at McDonald’s!
Q: What’s the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?
A: Everything is exciting in its own way – there is never a dull moment and I still learn something new every day.
Q: What legal term/fact should everyone know?
A: Whenever possible, get “it” in writing!
Q: What motivates you?
A: The beauty of the world. Smiling faces. Appreciation. Hard work. Passion. Good times.
Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
A: I sing! I am a classically-trained soprano. I was in choirs from pre-school through college and took private lessons as a teenager. Today, I sing for a classic metal cover band. I’ve always been a metalhead at heart (thanks, dad!).
Q: What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
A: I love spending time with my husband, four cats, family, and friends. I am in a book club, which is really fun. My husband and I cruise around in our corvette on nice days and we spend a lot of time working on “do-it-yourself” projects at home.
